ASFA writers place at Poetry Out Loud

Congratulations to our writing students who performed and placed at the regional spoken word competition, Poetry Out Loud!

Creative writing students Myra Grizzard, ASFA 11th-grader, and Egg McClure, ASFA 8th-grader, competed in the Poetry Out Loud competition in Montgomery, AL on March 2nd. Myra placed first in the Original Poetry Recitation category. Egg won the regional round for the Recitation category and placed second regionally in the Original Poetry category.

Our teachers continuously develop new ways for our students to grow. The ASFA Creative Writing Department featured several spoken word guest artists last semester, and creative writing faculty members Iris Rinke-Hammer and Ashley M. Jones offered our writing students a spoken-word short course earlier this semester.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with the Alabama State Council on the Arts to support this free High School program that builds students’ public speaking skills and self-confidence. Alabama participates in the National Competition, and also holds an Original Poetry Recitation Competition.
