We are Creative Writing. We are ASFA.
"We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect." -Anaïs Nin
This spring the Creative Writing Department is in full bloom. Students from 7th to 12th grade have developed their voices all year through a series of community readings. See the dates below and be sure to make one of the four left this season!
The department's annual publication, Cadence, will be released this spring. This impressive anthology contains a beautiful blend of poetry and prose and contains a piece from each student in the department. The publication is also edited by students, led by two seniors who serve as editors-in-chief. Copies are distributed to the ASFA community and sent to local libraries to be added to their collections. Help support our student's publication efforts by attending the Poem Museum Fundraiser on Wednesday, April 10.
Students regularly have their work published and have received numerous awards in regional and national writing competitions: Alabama Writers' Forum's Literary Arts Awards, the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts' youngARTS program, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, and the U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts program. Our creative writing faculty inspire our students to share their voices through their own works.
Three faculty members have recently published books:
TJ Beitelman released This is the Story of His Life
Ashley M. Jones released dark//thing: poems
Kwoya Fagin Maples released Mend
